CBC's modified sculling is a recreational program for new and experienced rowers in grades 7-8. New rowers learn to scull in a fun and safe environment, while experienced scullers can improve their technique and build strength.
Who can row modified?
All rowers (new and experienced) in 6th, 7th, or 8th grade will row on the Modified squad until they have finished 8th grade. In some cases 8th graders may be moved to the Freshman/Novice squad at the discretion of the coach.
Do rowers have to be at ICSD?
All CBC squads are open to students from any school district (including home-schooled students) who can commit to the practice schedule.
Do modified rowers compete?
Modified rowers do not compete or travel to away regattas.
What kind of boats do modified rowers use?
Modified rowers use four-person boats and stable, training singles. They focus on sculling (2 oars/person, one in each hand).
How many times per week is practice?
Modified practice is three times per week during the fall and spring seasons, depending on coach availability. Times vary per session. During the summer, modified rowers can join the learn to row programs.
A note on practices...
All spring, summer, and fall practices occur in Stewart Park at Cascadilla Boathouse. Practices are held, weather permitting, on the Cayuga and Fall Creek Inlets, and Cayuga Lake. Typically, boats go out in most weather except when there is a strong north wind or thunder. If the weather does not allow rowing, practices are held on-land and include aerobic workouts, strength training, erging, and stretching.
