Thursday 9/04/08, 6pm

Caryn Davies, stroke seat of the US Women's eight (2nd from right), and Andrew Byrnes, three seat of the Canadian Men's eight (3rd from left), are gold medal winners from the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Both of these athletes started their rowing careers at the Cascadilla Boat Club and went on to row for their colleges (Radcliffe and Bates) and for several national teams on the way to these honors. The US Women's and Canadian Men's eights went to the Olympics as the reigning World Champions from 2007 and continued to show their dominance during the Finals race.

The entire Ithaca Community is invited to meet and honor these two amazing athletes at the Cascadilla Boathouse in Stewart Park at 6pm on Thursday 9/04/2008 .

Drew Tennant is the New Head Coach at Cascadilla Boat Club

Drew Tennant is a Cornell graduate who rowed in the lightweight program through 2004. He has spent most of the past 4 years in Boston, the last three coaching high school girls at Boston Latin as well as graduate students at MIT. He has coached Cornell heavyweights during their winter training and comes highly recommended by Todd Kennett the Director of Rowing at Cornell. After spending a little time with him we believe he will bring a new energy to the position and to our club.

About the Cascadilla Boat Club Program:

Depending on weather conditions, CBC crews can be seen training on Fall Creek, Cayuga Inlet, and Cayuga Lake. During the first few weeks of the competitive racing seasons athletes will be training to see in which boats they will be racing in. Fall Program runs weekday afternoons from mid September to early November (depending on weather) and is geared towards racing at the head race style regattas. The Fall Scholastic Season is generally more relaxed and open to all levels of rowing ability from seasoned varsity rowers to those who have yet to step into a rowing shell. On the other hand, due to the increased level of competition, the Spring program is only open to athletes with previous rowing experience. For those athletes new to the sport of rowing, we encourage you to enroll in either the Summer Youth Learn-to-Row classes or the Fall Scholastic Program. Both scholastic programs are open to athletes from Ithaca High School, ACS, Trumansburg, and Lansing. Most of our scholastic athletes will spend time in the eight-oared shells, while the more experienced may be given the opportunity to go out in either the coxed four, quad, double, or the single.

The CBC offers many programs for those interested in the sport of rowing. The Scholastic Program brings in students from Ithaca High School, ACS, Lansing, Cascadilla School, and Trumansburg. While this group is busiest during the spring and fall months, there is also the opportunity to row during the summer months as well. For those wanting an introduction to the sport, we offer Learn-to-Row classes. These will be starting up in June and run through the summer. Finally, the Recreational and Masters groups meet throughout the week for a row either out on Cayuga Lake or down the Inlet. For more information on these programs, please check the web site.

On behalf of CBC's coaching staff, the executive, and parents booster board, We would like to welcome back all CBC club members. We are looking forward to seeing many faces - both new and familiar - around the boathouse.
